MEDIATION--4.20.2017
Apr 22, 2017

After a full day of mediation where we thought we were going to get certified for arbitration, the mediator told us that his supervisor wanted us to have one more meeting before he would certify us. He's a newer mediator, and though we've been negotiating since 2015, from his point of view I can see where he's right.

I know that many of you are frustrated and wish we had more details to report. As you know, negotiations are fluid and last week's "what if" offer would be taken off the table next week if we didn't accept it in its entirety. For instance, if the County offered us all lemonade in a "what if" proposal they made, and I told all of you that we're getting free lemonade, but then the next meeting the Guild rejected the offer because we didn't like other proposals in the same offer, everything (including the lemonade) would be off the table. In the meantime, you're all running around thinking about your lemonade, then upset when you find out the County isn't offering lemonade in a subsequent proposal.---This is why I'm not allowed to give you specifics about what we're currently asking for, or what the County is offering.

I can safely tell you this: by the time we were done on 4.20, the County had finally made the exact same salary offer they did for the rest of the County employees. We feel that this should have been the starting point in negotiations back in 2015! (NOTE--this % is still well below what our comps support, so we reject it). Most other areas of their "what if" literally go backwards from your most current contract. Your negotiations committee will not accept less than what you currently earn. Stay tuned~
